WILLYS JOINT Howlin' Wolf Tribute
This page is in tribute to Chester Burnett AKA Howlin' Wolf! A giant of a man he stood six feet three, and weighed up to 300 lbs! His name was also apt...
Chester Arthur Burnett was born June 10, 1910, in West Point, Mississippi. And died Jan 10, 1976, in Chicago, IL. He grew up on a cotton plantation in Rulevile Ms. He learned guitar from Charlie Patton, and Harp from brother in law Willie Miller (see Sonny Boy page) his skills on both instruments weren't "world class." What was, was his voice and commanding stage presence. He didn't sing the Blues he shouted, moaned, howled, and growled the Blues while at the same time using his face, hands to pound tables, and even crawling on all fours to assault you with his message. Few people ever went at music like the Wolf. The guitar chops on his memorable Chess sides were done by Hubert Sumlin a giant in his own right, and a man still very much alive I saw him live in NY in 1998 and '99. I also saw Howlin' Wolf live in NY in the early 1970s, and I'm here to tell you the man was big and the voice. Man if Mick Jagger and Jim Morrison, and many others, never heard it they may sound like Bobby Darren. (various sources including Encyclopedia of the Harmonica by Peter Krampert, Blues for Dummies by Lonnie Brooks, Cub Coda, and Wayne Baker Brooks, and liner notes).
Now the track I've choosen for this page is classic Wolf! It's "I'll be Around". Enjoy!
